Communication Management

Use of AI in Professional Communication

Special emphasis this year was placed on the subject of artificial intelligence.  Our teachers evaluated the use of AI in teaching and encouraged students to use it responsibly and constructively. AI is used, for example, to develop ideas, in content creation and in academic work. At the same time, students are encouraged to critically reflect on the use of artificial intelligence in professional communication.

Our communication researcher Marian Adolf analyzed the disinformation crisis caused by digitalization, AI and fake news with speeches on fake news & hate speech and participation in discussions on media consumption and uncertainty as a result of AI. At this year’s Conversations Conference the head of the Bachelor’s program David Dobrowsky presented the latest research findings on human-machine interaction.

SDGs were once again brought to the fore in the period under review and combined with a focus on internationalism. At the SDG Day our students impressed the judges with their poster presentations on greenwashing; the SDG Award went to a Master’s thesis from our degree program. Students on the Bachelor’s degree program analyzed companies in relation to sustainability as part of the international inter-university COIL Project led by Simone Zwickl, expert for strategic communication and sustainability. Sustainability expert Leyla Tavernaro-Haidarian emphasized the importance of Inner Development Goals for the sustainable implementation of SDGs in companies as part of the UNESCO Chair for Communication.

In the practical projects, the professionalism of our students once more impressed our corporate cooperation partners  Amundi, Greenpower, KPMG, Procter & Gamble, ÖH FHWien (the Austrian Students’ Union at FHWien), the Austrian Football League, Sanofi and Screenforce. In addition, we are pleased to report that our study on the work ethic of Gen Z was well received when it was published in Der Standard.

We are especially proud of the prizes won by two Master’s theses. One received the Franz Bogner Science Prize, the other the Appreciation Award of the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research. In addition, five graduates were selected as some of the Top PR Talents under 30. Outstanding students received special support in the new, interdisciplinary Excellence Club.

This was our second practical project with FHWien der WKW. Once again, we were impressed by the commitment and fresh ideas and, above all, by the professionalism of the students. It was a challenge to select the best concept, as every group developed convincing and realizable strategies and measures for the awareness campaign.

Digital Economy

New Master's Degree Programs Successfully Launched

Applied Research. The Department of Digital Economy, to which the Digital Economy study programs belong, concentrates its research activities in the Institute for Digital Transformation and Strategy. In addition to their teaching work, all members of the academic staff are actively involved in projects that are funded by third parties. They disseminate the results of their research in papers published in academic journals but also – which is especially important to us – in lectures and texts addressed to real-world users.

In 2024 our activities focused on two themes:

  • Digital technology as a lever for optimizing professional small parcel logistics.
  • The organizational synchronicity of efficiency and innovation as a strategic challenge in management

More Places on Bachelor’s Programs. In 2024 we again increased the number of places on our Bachelor’s degree program in Digital Business so that we are now able to take in 60 working students each year. One of the program’s special strengths is its hybrid organization from the second semester onward: Students can actively take part in tuition online even if they are not physically present on the campus for individual classes.

Master’s Degree Programs Launched. The most important milestone at the Department of Digital Economy in 2024 was the accreditation and successful launch of two new Master’s degree programs at the interface of digital technology and innovation: The Master’s program in Digital Innovation for graduates who hold a Bachelor’s degree in a business subject and the Master’s program in Digital Technology & Innovation for graduates of interdisciplinary study programs that provide a foundation in both information technology and business.

FH-Prof. Dr. Dr. Sebastian Eschenbach
Head of Department
Department of Digital Economy

Digital technology has become an indispensable part of our lives. With technical know-how combined with entrepreneurial thinking and communication and marketing skills, you’ll be prepared to take on a leading role in the world of business. Digital Business is the cross-disciplinary study program of the future!

Financial Management

Well Prepared for Careers in Financial Management

In 2024, digitalization remained a key focus area of the Financial Management study programs as nowadays it plays an important role in finance, accounting and taxation as well as in financial management and controlling. Our science-based academic program that nevertheless has a strong practical focus systematically integrates this development into our teaching and thus provides ideal preparation for a successful career in financial management.

The internationalization of our teaching activities also continued to be an important area of work, with students reaping the benefits in courses such as “Special Issues in International Accounting” and “Economics”.

In the area of project management and corporate projects existing partnerships were continued and new exciting projects were added.

As far as teaching was concerned, the proportion of online teaching was increased to create a didactically sensible balance of classroom teaching and distance learning. At the same time, increased use was made of modern didactic tools. In November 2024 one of our e-learning projects won a prize for innovative teaching.

In addition, implementation continued of the revised curricula for the Bachelor’s program in Finance, Accounting & Taxation and the Master’s program in Financial Management & Controlling.

Dr. Thomas Kaufmann-Lerchl
Head of Financial Management Study Programs

As alumni we both feel a special sense of attachment to the Bachelor’s program in Finance, Accounting & Taxation.

The combination of theoretical instruction and a strong practical focus is unique as it offers students valuable continuous exchange with lecturers from professional practice while ensuring that cutting-edge topics are always covered.

Accounting, national and international reporting, taxation and controlling provide a solid foundation of cross-cutting expertise that will get students off to a flying start in the world of finance. Furthermore, a great deal of importance is placed on students’ personal development. We at KPMG are proud to contribute to the development and education of young talents at FHWien der WKW!

Human Resources & Organization

A Year Full of Trends and New Challenges

The year 2024 was dominated by a host of new topics and so-called HR trends. These were successfully integrated into the teaching of Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in the form of guest lectures, excursions and exciting practical projects in cooperation with partners from the business world. Among the trending topics were HR analytics, digital automation and the use of AI in HR processes, future skills, lifelong learning and upskilling, hybrid work models, agile organizational development,  employee wellbeing, diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) as well as employee experience.

The study program team joined forces with some of our most dedicated students to organize and carry out numerous HR events which they enriched with presentations. One highlight in April was the first Transformation Camp ever to be held in a German-speaking country; organized and implemented in cooperation with fifty1 it attracted more than 200 participants. This innovative bar camp format was largely organized by students on our Master’s degree program and was dominated by the so-called trending topics.

In fall, we were able to demonstrate our expertise at several prestigious events, for example, in lectures at the HR Inside Summit in the Vienna Hofburg, but also at specialist events organized by karriere.at and the Work Smart Circle. Another highlight was our lecturers’ evening out at a wine tavern in September which was attended by many of our external instructors. They all enjoyed the opportunity to reflect on shared successes and current challenges in a relaxed atmosphere.

The year 2024 was also marked by a question of crucial importance: What influence does the use of artificial intelligence have on our teaching activities? The use of AI tools in teaching and in academic theses as well as the adaptation of examination formats in particular posed major challenges. Many of our in-house and external instructors took part in further training to meet these new demands.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the team of our study programs, our external lecturers, our students and all cooperation partners for helping to make 2024 such a successful year!

FH-Prof.in Dr.in Christina Maria Schweiger
Head of Human Resources & Organization Study Programs

In a world characterized by individualization, hybrid work and digitalization, learning in the workplace is becoming an ever-greater challenge and at the same time is gaining enormously in importance. The increasing complexity and rapid pace of change requires employees to adapt quickly to new circumstances. The HR practical project “TUI on the way to becoming a learning organization” was launched to keep up with this dynamic.  During the project, our learning culture was analyzed from an international perspective and specific recommendations for action were developed.

Working with students is always an inspiration for me, both as a lecturer on the Human Resources & Organization program and as a project partner. It opens up fresh perspectives and provides valuable input that in the long term also enriches our work.

Journalism & Media Management

Fresh Impulses for the Future: Journalism Training in a Changing World

For the Journalism & Media Management study programs, the year 2024 was marked by intense engagement with the effects of artificial intelligence (AI) on journalism. The focus in this regard was on the ethical, social and practical aspects of AI: for example, in the fight against disinformation, the use of AI in editorial processes and its consequences for journalism training. One highlight in this context was the cooperation with the Austrian UNESCO Commission at two events in the series “(High-quality) Journalism and Artificial Intelligence”.

International Projects and Intercultural Cooperation

Internationalization and intercultural cooperation also played a significant role for the study program in 2024. The multimedia project International School of Multimedia Journalism and the radio project Europe On Air used the opportunity provided by the European parliamentary elections to bring students from different countries together to produce reports on democracy, cultural diversity and the future of Europe.

Research Areas and Findings

The study program set research accents in areas ranging from an analysis of young media users’ trust in public service news to studies on the influence of AI on journalism. Gisela Reiter, Marian Adolf and Andreas Hess presented the results of their research at conferences and in specialist journals.

Workshops and Supporting Young Talent

An AI taster seminar introduced students to the potential applications of AI in journalism with participants then trying these out for themselves. The Sports Journalism Workshop enabled participants to benefit from the expertise of renowned reporters. The Journalism Young Talent Award was awarded in 2024 for the first time with the support of Der Standard and Kurier newspapers. The new Excellence Club is an interdisciplinary program that supports the personal and professional development of outstanding students.

With its wide range of activities, Austria’s leading journalism training program contributes to a public discourse that combines theory and practice.

FH-Prof.in Mag.a Dr.in Daniela Süssenbacher
Head of Journalism & Media Management Study Programs

Critical journalism is the most effective antidote to corruption and abuse of power. Thanks to investigative stories, everyone now knows that even the mere appearance of corruption can mean losing your job – even for chancellors and editors-in-chief. At best, this will lead to greater sensitivity in politics and editorial offices, but we should not rely on it. The basic prerequisite for serious research is journalists who work in a technically, legally and ethically sound manner. The investigators of tomorrow can learn what this requires in the Journalism & Media Management study programs at FHWien der WKW. With the lecture “Investigative Research”, I try to make a small contribution to this: students acquire research techniques to expose fake news and disinformation.

Management & Entrepreneurship

Practical Preparation for Leadership Roles

With a strong focus on practical relevance, the Management & Entrepreneurship study programs prepare students in both the Bachelor’s and Master’s program at various levels for future leadership roles.

In the winter semester 2024/25, the Bachelor’s program in Management & Entrepreneurship launched its new concept for Bachelor’s theses, which includes intensive support for students in the form of regular academic discussions and presentations as they write their theses. This modified approach compels students to argue every step of the process from identifying a research gap through to gaining new insights and providing recommendations for practical action for the respective target group. Carrying out realistic assignments and practical projects underline the program’s very high level of practical relevance.

The range of project topics this year again covered the entire portfolio of entrepreneurial activities. Students worked on real-world cases dealing with next generation home loan savings (commissioned by Raiffeisen), standards and certifications in the context of AI systems (Austrian Standards), modern incentive systems in sales (Würth), human resources management at the Ministry of Finance (Federal Ministry of Finance), artificial intelligence in van sales and the associated change processes (MAN) as well as Retail Media, AI in Marketing and Purpose-Driven Marketing (Santander Consumer Bank).

Manfred Schieber, MA MBA MSc
Head of Management & Entrepreneurship Study Programs

What makes studying for a Master’s in Executive Management so special is the fact that it has an interdisciplinary focus that gives the students a sound understanding of various corporate processes. Projects as part of teaching and lectures held by well-known entrepreneurs and faculty members promote networking between students and real-life managers. This allows them to expand their networks with interesting contacts while they’re still studying.

Marketing & Sales Management

Marketing & Sales – Always on the Pulse of the Times: AI in Teaching, Research and Practice

The topic of artificial intelligence ran through 2024 like a red thread. At the beginning of the year, Senior Researcher Ilona Pezenka gave a paper on tourism advertising between AI and cultural background at the ENTER Conference; later in the year, the chatbot study by Ilona Pezenka, David Dobrowsky and Gerald Janous was published in the journal Communication Studies. In addition, our teaching staff engaged intensively with the use of AI in teaching, as a result of which this subject found its way into numerous courses.

Our students demonstrated a high level of professionalism in field projects with BLAGUSS, HOFER, Mondelez and the Ottakringer Brauerei, impressing their clients with creative and innovative concepts that lived up to agency standards. The research results from two practical projects with the Austrian Football League were very well received when they were presented at the end of November at an event organized in cooperation with Marketing Club Österreich . Fittingly, the evening on the topic of Sports Sponsorship with Impact took place at the Generali Arena of Austria Wien Football Club.

We are very proud that a Master’s thesis on the Perception of Sustainability Aspects in Packaging  that was supervised by Senior Researcher David Bourdin won the Best Paper Award. In addition, in a joint action with the Communication Management and Journalism & Media Management study programs, we launched the Excellence Club for outstanding students.

The concepts developed by all the groups from the practical project with the Bachelor’s program in Marketing & Sales were professional and of a high standard. Many thanks to the students for the cleverly designed ideas and suggestions for implementation. It is always enriching to hear fresh ideas from young professionals.

Real Estate Management

Sustainability and Digitalization Remain Key Focus Areas in Teaching and Research

The new curricula were successfully implemented with the support of our experienced lecturers using suitable didactic methods. All academic papers produced in our study programs are thematically aligned to the SDGs. The immQu awards for the best Master’s thesis and the best graduate from the Master’s program were presented at a ceremony attended by the media.

One highlight in 2024 was the reaccreditation of our degree programs by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the global professional body for the real estate industry. Following a review of the curricula, the presentation of theses and quality management procedures, the RICS accreditation panel also asked students and lecturers for their opinions.  In particular, the panel praised the professional and practical management of the degree programs.

Anna-Vera Deinhammer’s Endowed Professorship for Sustainable Real Estate, which is fully funded by corporate donors, makes it possible to explore sustainability issues in project development even more deeply, to play an active role in the development of ÖNORM standards and to participate in international bodies and events, such as the Forum Alpbach. Research results are shared with the Chair’s sponsors TPA Steuerberatung GmbH, BUWOG Group GmbH, LENIKUS Immobilien GmbH, Erste Bank and Raiffeisenbank International and are incorporated into teaching on the Real Estate Management study programs.

A field trip organized in cooperation with the HLSU Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts gave our students the opportunity to view a number of projects in Zurich and Lucerne. In return, students from the university in Lucerne came to visit us in Vienna.

On monthly excursions to real estate projects our students gained valuable insights into ongoing projects in a variety of asset classes in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland. At the study programs’ second Digital Day, which featured a large number of industry partners, students were able to take home some valuable ideas and inspiration for their professional development.

All members of the study programs’ staff publish in specialist media and are sought-after speakers for lectures and discussions.

Dr. Klemens Braunisch, MRICS
Head of Real Estate Management Study Programs

Even though I had already established my own individual enterprise, I decided to enroll on the Bachelor’s study program in Real Estate at FHWien der WKW as a part-time student. The lectures with their strong practical focus and the countless contacts I have made among lecturers, mentors and fellow students have opened up an amazing number of new opportunities for me. My personal network has grown enormously – proving very beneficial to my professional career, too.

Tourism & Hospitality Management

Tourism Education for a Future Worth Living in

Despite difficult economic conditions, persistently high levels of inflation and geopolitical uncertainty, demand for travel continues unabated. The volume of business travel and leisure travel is equally high; at most, travelers skimp on spending at their destination. For tourism businesses, the year 2024 was dominated by the hot-button topics of sustainability, digitalization and employees.

Activities in the areas of research and teaching were also driven by these key issues. Cornelia Dlabaja, holder of our Endowed Professorship for Sustainable Urban and Tourism Development, joined forces with the Vienna Tourist Board to address the issue of urban space design in the context of tourism, and the acceptance of tourism. This work contributes directly to the overhaul of Vienna’s Visitor Economy Strategy. As part of the Master’s program in Urban Tourism & Visitor Economy Management, a study was conducted on the indirect economic effects of a destination’s investments in culture; the conclusions of the study were then translated into specific measures for a tourism strategy.

Implementation of the new curricula for the Bachelor’s degree program continued with innovations that included a new specialization module in Food Entrepreneurship. In the dual study program variant, the practical phases began for the first time in 2024. The more than 50 companies now offering practical work experience include all the leading tourism companies in the greater Vienna area.

Digitalization in tourism is subjected to a critical analysis yet at the same time utilized by students and lecturers to develop tourism products. Artificial intelligence has found its way into both our teaching activities and our day-to-day work and in the long term will bring about significant changes to how we work in the study programs.

Dr. Florian Aubke
Head of Tourism & Hospitality Management Study Programs

Tourism is one of the sectors in the world economy that has been hardest hit by the corona crisis. While in the past urban tourism was the main growth driver, for a variety of reasons it will not be possible to simply return to the “old normal” even after COVID-19.

This new Master’s program conveys the exciting possibilities that exist to rethink the sustainable development of urban tourism. Because in the future, it will become increasingly important to balance the wishes and interests of visitors and local populations. Against this background, destination development takes on a new meaning that takes much more into consideration than does an approach focused purely on tourism.

During the study program students are able to test and apply what they have learned in theory and practice as together they develop a vision for the future of urban tourism!

Fourth Certification for the hochschuleundfamilie Audit

In 2024, FHWien der WKW underwent its fourth certification process for the state quality label for family-friendly universities, the hochschuleundfamilie audit.

In September, administrative staff, faculty members and students took part in an audit workshop at which they defined a number of objectives to be implemented over the next three years, including:

  • Greater information about support for family-friendly study
  • To raise awareness that meetings can be planned in a way that shows consideration to part-time employees and takes into account various working time models
  • To increase the visibility of good practices in relation to care or paternity leave

The audit process was carried out by TÜV Süd and was followed by the recertification of FHWien as a family-friendly university. Certification is valid until 2027.

Manual for Creating Accessible Teaching Material

Inclusion in education includes equitable participation in tuition for everyone and thus accessible teaching and learning resources. We endeavor to raise awareness among our lecturers about this issue and to educate them about digital accessibility. In 2024, a guide to creating inclusive teaching materials was drawn up to communicate the basics of:

  • Creating accessible Word and PowerPoint documents
  • Using format templates
  • Embedding images
  • Converting documents into accessible PDF formats

The Manual is available to lecturers, students and other members of FHWien der WKW’s staff on Moodle.

Internationalization at FHWien der WKW

Our students’ international mobility continued to develop well in 2024, with 254 students completing a study-abroad semester and 49 an Erasmus internship abroad. An increasing number of students also took advantage of the opportunity to participate in an international short-term mobility program, including 44 students who took part in an Erasmus Blended Intensive Program.

309 incoming students from universities all over the world chose FHWien der WKW as their host university.

A total of 31 staff members spent time abroad in 15 European countries within the framework of the Erasmus Staff Mobility program; 18 of them taught at a partner university, 13 took part in a continuing education program.

By the end of the second project year, important preliminary results were available from the MA-23-funded EDU-INNO-KOOP project. Based on a survey of students and teachers, we developed a prototype innovative mobility format for part-time students. In the next step, the prototype will be tested and evaluated. Another key aspect of the project, namely, the evaluation of university partnerships, is very advanced and will soon enable us to classify our partnerships.

Project highlights include the international dissemination of project results: Sieglinde Martin and Leyla Tavernaro-Haidarian from the Department of Communication gave talks about the project at the edcom conference in London and Verena Podlaha from the Center for International Education and Mobility gave a poster presentation at the EAIE annual conference in Toulouse.

Radio Radieschen

Radio Radieschen is FHWien der WKW’s in-house training station for students from the Journalism & Media Management study programs. When it is not being used for teaching, the station’s small but excellent editorial team delivers high-quality content.

Radio Radieschen broadcasts on 91.3 MHz in Vienna and is also available on DAB+ in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland. In addition to on-air operations, there is also an online stream. All the information you need can be found on the Radio Radieschen website.

A Year Full of Milestones and Fresh Impulses

For Radio Radieschen, 2024 was a year of innovations, exciting projects and successes. One major milestone was the overhaul of our on-air-jingles. With a modern sound design, they give the station a contemporary profile and ensure instant recognition – perfectly in keeping with the motto “Radio to my taste“.

Fresh ideas came from a newcomer to the editorial team, Hannah Jutz. She is a graduate of the FHWien der WKW’s Bachelor’s program in Journalism & Media Management.

Rendezvous Point for Audio Enthusiasts

The feature format Abend im Hörfeld once more served as a valuable rendezvous point for all those wanting to learn more about the real background to stories and to network with creative minds from the radio world to learn from one another. Highlights included evenings with the makers of the OH WOW Podcasts – Jeanne Drach, Jana Wiese and Anna Muhr – and with the team behind the Kurier newspaper’s podcast Dunkle Spuren with Yvonne Widler, Dominik Kanzian, Valerie Krb and Alexandra Diry.

An Award-Winning Team

Another success was the nomination of our feature Da können wir Ihnen auch nicht weiterhelfen: Staatenlose in Österreich for the Radio Prize for Adult Education. The documentary produced by Johanna Hirzberger and Vincent Leb looked at the lives of stateless people living in Austria.

The year culminated with the inclusion of a member of our editorial staff, Vincent Leb, on the 30 unter 30 list of the magazine Österreichs journalist:in.

TeamLife at FHWien der WKW

People from academia and the business world come together at FHWien der WKW to provide students with an outstanding academic education, and the business world and international scientific community with application-oriented research.

Diverse, engaging, meaningful – these values underpin all our work in teaching, research and administration at FHWien der WKW. They drive us, motivate us, and bind us together.

Our values do not just exist on paper – we constantly take measures to bring them to life. Even during the onboarding process we invite new members of staff to familiarize themselves with our values at a workshop.

An important role is played by the VIS-Zack Team – a group of brand ambassadors from all areas of the company.

The VIS-Zacks

  • develop measures to make our values visible
  • collect input and the concerns of employees and communicate them to the management.
  • act as a self-reflection group (e.g., within the framework of employee surveys)
  • actively contribute to clearing up misunderstandings and promoting a transparent working environment.
  • hold events (e.g., pub quiz, blind coffee) to network the different departments.

At FHWien der WKW we practice and promote open communication – not just through the VIS-Zacks, but through regular feedback meetings and roundtable discussions with management.

Our staff events in a wide variety of formats also encourage networking and provide a forum for open exchange. We take great satisfaction from the immense willingness of our colleagues to help others, to support one another and to share their know-how.

Promoting the health of all our employees is a corporate goal: We have therefore committed ourselves to the BGF Charta and are guided by the principles of a healthy company. In 2024 we were awarded the BGF Seal of Quality by the Österreichische Gesundheitskasse: For insights into our efforts to promote health at our university watch this video.

All these activities take place under the name TeamLife. More on this can be found in the following video.

Studying real business – for 30 years

2024 was a special year for FHWien der WKW as it celebrated its 30th anniversary. Since its foundation in 1994, it has established itself as Austria’s leading university of applied sciences for management and communication and has produced around 16,000 graduates. Thanks to the practical training they have received here, they are in high demand on the job market.

A key topic of the year was digital transformation and artificial intelligence (AI). With the launch of two new Master’s degree programs in September 2024, we have expanded our range of study programs in the field of digitalization. The two Master’s in Digital Innovation and Digital Technology & Innovation qualify students for management roles at the interface of digital technology and economic innovation.

We have also created a pioneering course in the Bachelor’s degree program in Digital Business: The new specialization “AI for Business” provides in-depth knowledge about the use of artificial intelligence in business practice.

Digitalization is not only changing the economy, but also the world of education. We are responding to this with the “Learning studio for hybrid teams” research project, which creates a learning environment in which teachers and students can work together on site and via the internet – using robots and digital flipcharts, among other things. Researchers at our university of applied sciences have also looked at the potential and risks of AI in human resources development.

A highlight for students and alumni was the Career Day, where they were able to make valuable contacts with 35 top companies. The fact that we are rightly proud of our many successful alumni became clear at the Alumni Awards ceremony.

My thanks go to our dedicated staff in teaching, research and administration. They offer our students a first-class education, they conduct applied research that provides useful impetus for the economy and they guarantee the smooth running of our university. Together, they make the success and positive development of FHWien der WKW possible.

A Year Dominated by Digitalization and AI

2024 was a year of progress and innovation for our university of applied sciences in which we successfully advanced the digitalization of our study program management.

One highlight was the launch of the digital application portal, which makes it easier for prospective students to apply for a place to study and for our team to manage the admissions process. Since this multi-year project presented a number of challenges, it was all the more pleasing that we had a record number of applicants in the year the portal was launched.

Another key focus was the use of hybrid classrooms for teaching activities and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in tuition.  To support this process, we drew up a reference framework for lecturers and students and organized numerous training sessions for teaching staff. We also supplemented these training courses with a wide range of opportunities for people to share their experiences. Many lecturers used AI to enrich students’ learning activities and to familiarize them with industry-specific applications.

We were delighted to receive 37 submissions for the 2024 Award for Innovative Teaching, a figure that reflects the immense dedication of our lecturers. The award-winning projects include excellent examples of how to formulate learning outcomes, the integration of synchronous and asynchronous learning phases and the use of AI in teaching. The award in the category “Recipes for Success for Integrated Courses” went to Christina Schweiger and Sigrid Maxl-Studler for their course “Learning and Development Theories”. The winner of the Teaching Award in the category “Sustainable Development Goals in Teaching” was Hannah Gratzer.

Additionally, we surveyed our part-time lecturers about their motivation and their teaching goals. We were thrilled about how much positive feedback we received. The valuable insights we gained will help us provide even more targeted support for our lecturers in the future.

We are proud of all that we achieved in 2024 and thank everyone who has contributed to offering our students a forward-looking education.

Business Orientation and Practical Relevance as Factors for Success

Among many other benefits of Vienna as a business location, one is of particular importance to companies: the availability of highly trained specialists and managers. Since 1994, FHWien der WKW has been making a key contribution in this regard. With its practice-oriented study programs, it precisely meets the needs of the economy. Its graduates are in high demand on the job market, with many reaching top positions.

Lecturers with a background in business

FHWien der WKW has established itself as Austria’s leading university of applied sciences for management and communication and plays a key role in shaping Vienna’s educational landscape. As owners, the Vienna Economic Chamber (Wirtschaftskammer Wien / WKW) and the Vienna Business Fund (Fonds der Wiener Kaufmannschaft) have been committed to FHWien der WKW’s mission from the start, thus supporting business-oriented teaching and research in Austria.

Two thirds of the lecturers at FHWien der WKW have a background in business. As specialists and managers, they gain the experience that they then pass on to students. Practical projects commissioned by companies bring students into contact with the business world – a starting advantage when entering professional life.

Focus on digital transformation and sustainability

In its curricula, FHWien der WKW addresses challenges that companies are currently facing. These include social and ecological sustainability as well as the transformation of the economy through digitalization and artificial intelligence. This profound change is addressed in all study programs. Students learn how digital technology is changing the respective professional field and what opportunities this opens up. The university of applied sciences also cooperates with companies in research – for example in the Endowed Professorship for Sustainable Urban and Tourism Development, which is funded by the Vienna Economic Chamber.

Combining work and continuing education

An educational program tailored to the needs of working professionals is a particular concern of the Vienna Economic Chamber and the Vienna Business Fund. With its part-time degree programs and continuing education programs, FHWien der WKW makes it possible to combine continuing education with work and private life.  The university’s portfolio is rounded off by Hernstein’s training courses in the field of management and organizational development. This makes it a unique provider in the higher education sector.

Focused Development and Future-Oriented Optimization

The year 2024 at Hernstein was characterized by strategic development. We took targeted measures to prepare for future challenges and optimize our internal processes.

As part of a strategic consulting project, the organizational structure was comprehensively evaluated – with the aim of optimizing processes. This involved bundling competencies, which has increased our effectiveness. Trainer fees were also adjusted. At the same time, we have focused the portfolio on the proven Hernstein classics – and thus on our core strengths.

A new dynamic was established in sales. We achieved this through a revised sales concept, a stronger presence at trade fairs, expanded LinkedIn activities and the development of customer references.

Our marketing was restructured in 2024. Responsibility for management and implementation now lies with our parent company, FHWien der WKW. Milestones included the relaunch of our website, the new corporate design and the continuation of the successful Hernstein Management Report.

Cooperation with FHWien der WKW was intensified in order to make the best possible use of synergies. We held talks with heads of study programs with the aim of adapting our offerings more closely to academic requirements. Another innovation was the pilot of a blended learning format on the topic of conflict management, which will enrich our portfolio in future.

Enabling and Communicating Successful Research

In 2024 the research management expertise that had been built up in recent years was broadened and optimized. One very helpful measure in this context was the integration of project controlling into the Research department.

In cooperation with an external PR consultant, researchers at FHWien der WKW were given support to help them communicate more impactfully. Internal exchange among researchers was intensified in the established event series “Brown Bag – Research Lunch”, “Research Colloquium” and “Research Roundtable”, in keeping with the vision of developing a knowledge-sharing community. The progress of the Competence Team Master Propaedeutics – Bridging Courses in Research Skills and Methods was just one of the activities presented within this framework. This project was launched in 2024 and is sponsored by the City of Vienna.

The standardization of FHWien der WKW’s research web presence has been completed with new landing pages, structured according to research focus areas, and the relaunch of the Department of Management’s research webpages. Supplementary project pages and a growing project archive round off the online offerings.

Artificial Intelligence in Business and Education

This year, research in the area of digitalization & digital transformation focused on AI applications in business and education. The project AI in the Educational Sector of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, for example, has been investigating the opportunities and challenges presented by the latest AI technologies in teaching since the beginning of 2024. The Learning Studio for Hybrid Teams launched in 2023 with funding from the City of Vienna (MA 23) has created the technical infrastructure for hybrid teamwork at FHWien der WKW. The next step will be to integrate the new technical tools into the various courses.

Optimizing Logistics with AI

In recent years, the Institute for Digital Transformation and Strategy (IDS) won two FFG-funded projects to digitalize supply chains in small parcel logistics. One of them, (ReKEP) was completed in the year under review and work on the other, in the field of military logistics, (RESISTANT) was continued. In fall 2024 a follow-up project, known by its acronym SIBORC, was launched with the aim of optimizing complex circular systems in logistics using AI and digital twins. Last but not least, further findings from the MA 23-funded research project Organizational Ambidexterity in SMEs launched in 2022 were released in publications and lectures.

Research Highlights in the Area of Digitalization & Digital Transformation

  • The chapter “How can smaller, established companies take advantage of the opportunities presented by the digital transformation?” was published in the practical handbook Kompetenzen in der Digitalen Transformation der Arbeit
  • An article in the Austrian Management Review and expert lectures at the G-Forum 2024 (Development of Digital Technologies and Skills in Austrian SMEs)
  • Publications in Tehnicki glasnik/Technical Journal and lectures at MOTSP 2024:

Sustainable Transformation of the Economy

In 2024 the research area Responsibility & Sustainability established itself as an interdisciplinary cross-sectional issue that is being further developed by the endowed professors for Sustainable Real Estate Development and Sustainable Urban & Tourism Development among other things.

Skills for Sustainability in Business and Teaching

The recently completed research project conducted by the Change for Corporate Sustainability (TransformS) Competence Team, which is funded by the City of Vienna (MA 23), explored how Austrian companies can develop the necessary strategic change competencies that are required for the transformation towards greater sustainability. As part of the project an extracurricular course entitled Change Competencies for Sustainable Development was developed. In 2024 it successfully transferred the insights gained from the project into teaching activities at FHWien der WKW for the third time.

Highlights of Research in the Area of Responsibility & Sustainability

  • Successful completion of the research project “City of Vienna Competence Team Change for Corporate Sustainability (TransformS)”, including a publication in the prestigious Palgrave Handbook of Social Sustainability in Business Education
  • The Endowed Professors for Sustainable Real Estate Development and Sustainable Urban Tourism enjoyed a strong presence in both the mass and specialist media.
  • In cooperation with the Circular Economy Forum Austria, Anna-Vera Deinhammer, Endowed Professor for Sustainable Real Estate Development, ran three workshops as part of the STRABAG Labs on the circular economy in the construction industry at the European Forum Alpbach 2024.
  • Inaugural lecture by Cornelia Dlabaja, Endowed Professor for Sustainable Urban and Tourism Development; the lecture was attended by the State Secretary for Tourism Susanne Kraus-Winkler, the Head of the General Directorate for Tourism at the Ministry of Sustainability and Tourism Ulrike Rauch-Keschmann, the Vice-President of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce and Industry Hans Arsenovic, and Clemens Költringer from the Vienna Tourist Board among others.
