Focus & Qualifications

The study program focuses on the creative use of digital technology for successful and responsible innovation.

The study experience is characterized by real-life challenge-based learning. Students develop new competencies primarily through agile hands-on project work. These projects relate to real-world challenges for which student teams create innovative solutions and software prototypes.

Through this agile hands-on project work, students — even without a technical first degree — acquire the ability to familiarize themselves with current subfields of digital technology, e.g. Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, Internet of Things and Robotics/Assistant Systems.

Through the Master’s program in Digital Innovation Engineering, students combine

  • basic economic understanding from their undergraduate studies and
  • industry experience through their professional activities before their studies and during them with
  • expertise and implementation skills in the innovative application of digital technology.

Curriculum

1st semester

Regional Networking — 6 ECTS

  • networking with regional digital innovation community
  • team-building

Cloud-based IT-Infrastructure — 6 ECTS

  • technical and organizational aspects of global cloud infrastructures
  • data protection, data security and compliance

Introduction to Software Development — 6 ECTS

  • introduction to concepts and principles of programming
  • working with a high-level programming language
  • working with programming environments

Technology Based Innovation — 6 ECTS

  • innovation methods
  • innovation management
  • innovation economics

Strategic Transformation — 6 ECTS

  • Microeconomics of Competitiveness
  • strategic change management

2nd semester

International Networking — 6 ECTS

  • intercultural communication
  • international study trip

Project Work: Process Innovation Challenge — 24 ECTS

  • real challenge from corporate partners or current R&D projects of FHWien
  • development of innovative business processes
  • hands-on familiarization with current sub-areas of digital technology
  • agile development of software prototypes
  • collaboration in student teams under the guidance of lecturers
  • accompanying inputs on technology ethics, data protection, cybersecurity and copyright law
  • accompanying coaching

3rd semester

Thesis Preparation — 6 ECTS

  • systematic literature research
  • scientific writing
  • scientific methods

Project Work: Product Innovation Challenge — 24 ECTS

  • real challenge from corporate partners or current R&D projects of FHWien
  • development of innovative business processes
  • hands-on familiarization with current sub-areas of digital technology
  • agile development of software prototypes
  • collaboration in student teams under the guidance of lecturers
  • accompanying inputs on digital product design, gender-sensitive design, data protection, cybersecurity and copyright law
  • accompanying coaching

4th semester

Thesis Coaching — 6 ECTS

  • feedback on the Masters thesis
  • coaching on research, citation and scientific writing

Master’s Thesis — 18 ECTS

  • work scientifically on a challenge from professional practice
  • plan, implement and document an independent research, development or innovation project
  • individual supervision

Final Exam — 6 ECTS

  • presentation of the Masters thesis
  • examination discussion about the Masters thesis and other contents relevant to the curriculum

The Masters program qualifies students to take on leadership roles as innovation engineers in the creation of new products, services and business processes using the latest digital technology.

Graduates of the Masters program in Digital Innovation Engineering are qualified for the following fields of activity, among others:

Innovation

… taking responsibility for innovation processes that lead to the design of sustainable value chains and new, digital services. To this end, they use agile innovation methods (e.g. design thinking).

Technology

… independently familiarizing themselves — even beyond their studies — with current, interconnected subfields of digital technology (e.g. artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain, Internet of Things, robotics/assistance systems).

creating prototypes as a member of a team along agile process models (e.g. Scrum) and of using the currently cloud-based IT infrastructure required for this purpose.

assessing the technical feasibility of using digital technology for concrete innovation projects, including key requirements for IT architecture.

Through their basic economic training, graduates are able to link their assessment of the technical feasibility of an innovation project with the evaluation of the economic prospects for success.

Communication that connects disciplines

explaining to clients and future users the possible uses, limitations, and prerequisites for the use of digital technology, and of systematically communicating user requirements and feedback on partial results to software development teams. In doing so, they can deal transparently with trade-offs between diverse demands on digital innovation.

Scientific work

… understanding the benefits and limitations of scientifically based approaches, of acquiring selected scientific methods under guidance, of using them correctly, and of communicating corresponding work processes and results precisely.
