When AI takes over journalism…

August 8, 2025

Communication scientist and media sociologist Marian Adolf from the Department of Communication spoke with Stefan Tesch on the “relevant podcast” about what happens when artificial intelligence takes control of information sovereignty.

What happens when AI takes control over information? What are true facts and what are false facts? AI is putting our society’s information ecosystem under tremendous pressure. Stefan Tesch, editor of the “relevant podcast”, spoke with Marian Adolf, media professor at FHWien der WKW, about trust in knowledge. Adolf is an Austrian media and communication scientist who focuses on the connection between media and social change.

Change in media and society based on the example of AI

The conversation addressed the essential functions that communication and media play in our society. Among other things, topics included the central role of knowledge in modern society and the possible effects of increasing AI use on social cohesion, the economy, and our democracy. For example, they discuss how exactly “fake news” undermines social cohesion and why we should speak of a discourse crisis in modern society rather than a disinformation crisis. The extent to which media change and social change are interrelated is illustrated by the example of AI, which will change our professional and everyday lives forever. The podcast episode offers dense insights into the media world of our time from a scientific perspective.
