Research project: Subjective well-being of museum visitors

May 15, 2025

Can well-being be measured? And how comfortable do visitors feel at the Belvedere Museum’s “Free Friday Night” events? In an exciting collaboration, Andreas Minichberger and Daniela Wagner from the Tourism & Hospitality Management Study Programs and Master’s student Camila Alves Sanches investigated the well-being of visitors during the popular series of free events at the Upper Belvedere.

Practical research in the heart of Vienna

The survey was based on Falk’s Enhanced Well-being Framework. The questionnaire derived from this and adapted for the event series comprised four categories of well-being (personal, intellectual, physical and social). The survey took place during the “Free Friday Night Events” between January and March 2025, and almost 250 visitors were surveyed.

Strong results and high practical relevance

The results were presented to Belvedere representatives from the Marketing & Communication and Art Education departments at the end of April. And they showed impressively: Visiting the Free Friday Night contributes significantly to the well-being of guests in all the categories surveyed.

The demographic data also provided additional information about the visitor profile and preferences. The topic of “Museum Well-being” will also be examined in more detail as part of the Master’s thesis and will be presented together with the final project report in June 2025.

The collaboration with the Tourism & Hospitality Management Study Programs at FHWien der WKW was extremely enriching for us. The well-founded analysis and practical recommendations provide us with valuable approaches to further optimize the visitor experience at the Free Friday Nights.”

This project underlines the practical relevance of the Tourism & Hospitality Management Study programs and offers an exciting exchange with partners from the tourism industry.
