Radio Radieschen host Johanna Hirzberger nominated for Prix Europa

September 9, 2021

Out of 684 submitted productions from 268 media organizations, her Ö1 feature entitled “Darf’s ein bisserl weniger sein? Systemerhalterinnen: viel Applaus – wenig Lohn” in the category “Radio Documentary” was selected by an independent commission of experts for the prestigious Prix Europa radio award.

The Prix Europa is a media competition that was founded 1987. Each year, media professionals from across the continent honour the best European television, radio and digital media productions of the year. Prix Europa, founded by the European Parliament and the European Commission, is now considered one of the most important and influential media awards in Europe. The Prix Europa 2021 festival will take place in Potsdam from October 10th to 15th .

Women in system-relevant professions: much applause – little pay

For her now nominated radio report, Johanna Hirzberger accompanied seven women from all over Austria for one year. They work in the care of people with disabilities, in nursing, in hospitals, for cleaning companies, in kindergartens, in food warehouses and in sales. She asked: Why is the work of these women worth so little to society? What do they need to improve their lives – and not have to worry about the future of their children or their pensions? The radio report was produced as part of the Ö1 Feature Young Talent Award #movingradio.

Since May 2021, Johanna Hirzberger has been joining the editorial team of Radio Radieschen, the educational radio station of University of Applied Sciences for Management & Communication (FHWien der WKW), as editor and presenter. She is responsible for creating the station series “Perspektiven” (feature format), “#Vienna” (city magazine) as well as “Frisch Gemischt” (music show). Previously, she worked for SPIEGEL TV, n-tv, ORF and ProSiebenSat1. She also works as a freelance editor at Ö1 in the areas of science and features for the broadcast series “Hörbilder”, “Radiodoktor”, “Digital.Leben” and “Matrix”.

Since 2019 the Ö1 feature editorial team offers the young talent award “moving radio” for radio journalists under the age of 35 – out of 52 young journalists four got the opportunity to realize their ideas. The topics of the four winners range from system keepers: a lot of work – little pay, to Pentecostal churches in Austria and the barely processed history of youth resistance during National Socialism at a Viennese school. By fall 2021, all the features will be broadcast as part of the radio series “Hörbilder” – as part of the radiophonic workshop, audio samples will be presented and the award winners will be interviewed about their experiences.
