Excursion to HausWirtschaft: how work and living can be combined

June 5, 2025

As part of the voluntary excursion series organized by the Real Estate Management department, students had the exclusive opportunity to visit the innovative HausWirtschaft project in Vienna’s Nordbahn district. The excursion offered exciting insights into a building that is considered a pioneer in combining working and living and reinterpreting the cooperative concept.

What makes HausWirtschaft special?

HausWirtschaft is a seven-storey atrium building that has been operated by a cooperative for the common good since 2023. What makes it special: 50% of the space here is used for living and 50% for working. In total, around 200 people live and work in 46 apartments and numerous small-scale, affordable commercial spaces under one roof. HausWirtschaft was developed in a participatory process together with the future users, the architecture firm einszueins and the property developer EGW.

Insights from the excursion

During the tour, the participants were given architectural and organizational insights into the project. The openness of HausWirtschaft towards the district was particularly impressive: the project actively seeks exchange with the neighborhood and opens its rooms for events and collaborations.

The excursion was made possible by the commitment of our students, especially Ms. Elia Stefan. She was instrumental in organizing this exclusive tour – thank you very much!
