CGBE as co-organiser of the EBEN Research Conference on Corruption in Corporations

September 14, 2018

“Corruption and Beyond – Fraudulent Behavior in and of Corporations” was the topic of the conference co-organised by the Center for Corporate Governance & Business Ethics of the FHWien of the WKW, which took place last week in Vienna.

The conference, initiated by EBEN Austria in cooperation with the Center for Corporate Governance & Business Ethics (CGBE) of FHWien der WKW, took place from 6 to 8 September 2018 at Palais Eschenbach in Vienna. EBEN (European Business Ethics Network) is the European network for business ethics and supports initiatives on a trans-european, national and regional level.

Over 70 experts from Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, South Africa, Australia and the USA as well as from 15 European countries took part in this year’s conference on combating corruption. Among them was the renowned researcher Richard Nielsen, Professor at Boston College. In his keynote, he spoke about anti-corruption methods in the context of different economic policy systems.

Markus Scholz, Head of CGBE and Co-Head of Research Cluster SMEs & Family Businesses of the FHWien der WKW, discussed anti-corruption methods with Victoria Williams (CEO of GSK Austria), Nastassja Cernko (Sustainability Manager of OeKB), Georg Greutter (COO of Simacek) and Andreas Gnesda (President of ÖGV) at the conference. The discussion was moderated by Daniela Ortiz, head of the “City of Vienna Competence Team for Sustainable, Strategic & Opportunity-Oriented Management of SMEs” at the FHWien der WKW. Her conclusion: “All participants agreed that institutional development to combat corruption (in the sense of laws, recommendations, etc.) is an important step because it would raise awareness of the need for transparency towards stakeholders. However, regulations alone are not enough. Leadership is needed in the company to establish measures against corruption. Collective Action Strategies – in the sense of self-regulation – also complement the institutionally determined framework.”
