An Evening at Hörfeld with Journalist Anja Troelenberg: Border Business – The Business of Europe’s Borders

May 26, 2026 | 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm
FHWien der WKW | Festsaal C 517| Währinger Gürtel 97, 1180 Wien

Creative audio productions are flourishing in Austria, and this evening at Hörfeld invites you to discover the stories behind the sounds. On May 26, we welcome journalist Anja Troelenberg and delve into her Ö1 Radiokolleg series “Border Business – The Business of Europe’s Borders.” Together, we’ll listen to excerpts and then discuss research, production processes, and the challenges of investigative audio work.

Cameras with facial recognition that track every move in refugee camps. Algorithms that decide on asylum applications. Drones that monitor Europe’s borders in real time. The EU is stepping up border security—with high-security camps and ever-new control systems. Behind this lies not only politics, but also a growing business. The series explores who is investing, who is profiting—and who is losing out. An investigative journey into Europe’s new migration policy by Anja Troelenberg and Franziska Grillmeier.

This time’s guest: journalist Anja Troelenberg. Together with Franziska Grillmeier, she created the series “Border Business – The Business of Europe’s Borders” for Ö1, which was broadcast as part of the Radiokolleg and is also available as a podcast. The series shows how Europe’s border policy has changed—and how this has given rise to a multi-billion-euro business.

At the evening event at Hörfeld, Anja Troelenberg will share insights into her research and discuss with us the challenges of investigative audio work: How do you work under difficult conditions? And how can complex political topics be presented in a way that is both understandable and engaging?
