Freshmen guide: Useful insider tips & advice for our first-semester students

Just in time for the start of the new semester we have gathered a few helpful tips, important services and contact points for our first-semester students.

Where can I find the confirmation of enrollment? What are the accommodation options for students in Vienna? How can I borrow a book from the library? Where can I find information about internships? Questions upon questions. At the beginning of your studies, your head is spinning and you are nervous about finding the right lecture hall for your first lecture.

To help you get started, we have put together some of the most important information for our first-semester students:

  • Accommodation: Whether student residences, shared flats or your own garconniere – there are countless accommodation options for students in Vienna. Further information can be found on our website or on the ÖH website.
  • Appetite: It’s hard to study with an empty stomach … Good thing that our campus has a canteen on the 1st floor. There are also several supermarkets (Billa, Spar) and restaurants nearby our campus.
  • Campus Card: The Campus Card is a multifunction card and your admission ticket to the campus. It is issued once at the beginning of your studies and is non-transferable. It has the following functions: Campus ID card/student ID card, key function on campus, print and copy. Please note that you must update the card every 30 days at the update point next to the Service Point for the key function to work. If you lose your Campus Card, please contact the Service Point.
  • Campus Shop: Our Campus Shop is located on the 1st floor foyer and offers instructional literature, book ordering, and spiralization of Bachelor’s theses, as well as stationery and our hoodies/T-shirts.
  • Center for International Education & Mobility (CIEM): Our CIEM is always available for advice and assistance, helping our outgoings organize their semester abroad, supervising our incoming students, and working with more than 170 partner universities of us worldwide.
  • Confirmations: Students can download study confirmations (confirmation of enrollment, study sheet, proof of academic success, etc.) via FHWien|Online. Instructions can be found in the Moodle glossary.
  • E-mail: All students receive a personal e-mail address (firstname.lastname@edu.fh-wien.ac.at). The password is the same as in FHWien|Online.
  • Events: Interesting guest lectures, information events, alumni talks, summer festival, challenges for our students and much more: On our website you will find a list of all important events.
  • FHWien|Online: FHWien|Online is our administrative intranet. Here, students and lecturers can access the entire internal system. Here you can find for example: information about your courses, timetable, etc.
  • Future prospects: Our graduates are much sought-after. On FHWien 360, you can find some videos of our graduates talking about their career paths and future plans after studying at FHWien der WKW. In addition, we regularly publish exciting reports about the career paths and success stories of our former students on Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram (#fhwienalumnistories).
  • Grades: You will find your exam results in FHWien|Online as soon as the instructor has entered them. You also have the possibility to get insight into your past exams.
  • How to get there: FHWien der WKW is located at the WKO Campus, directly at Währinger Gürtel 97 in the 18th district. Our campus is easily accessible by public transport: Directly connected to the subway line U6, the streetcar lines 40, 41 and 42 as well as the bus lines 37A and 40A. The Wiener Linien (Vienna’s public transport service) offers a discounted semester ticket for students. All information is available on the website of Wiener Linien. The ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) also offers various benefits for students under the age of 26. Information can be found on the ÖBB website. Students with their main residence in Lower Austria receive a financial subsidy from the state of Lower Austria (info on the website of the Lower Austrian state government).
  • IT rooms: Our students can use the IT room B104 (1st floor). Here you can find computers and printers for free use. If you have any questions about our IT services (FHWien|Online, webmail, login, software offers, hardware, IT rooms/lecture halls etc.) please contact our IT helpdesk (login with your FH email address and password).
  • Job platform: We have our very own job platform for students and graduates. Tip: Register now at our Career Center and apply for internships or full- & part-time positions. You can also find helpful career tips and exciting networking events here. Please note: On October 7, 2021 our Online Career Day takes place!
  • Learning areas: A variety of learning areas and lounges are available for students: Communication islands and glass boxes on all floors, IT room B106 with computers and printers on the 1st floor, etc. More details and a guide on “how to reserve a room for a study group” can be found on Moodle.
  • Leisure activities: Vienna is a vibrant city for students! Whether sports & leisure, art & culture, culinary & nightlife – Austria’s capital has so much to offer! Here’s some inspiration. On our Instagram channel we also share snapshots of the most beautiful places in Vienna on the weekends.
  • Library: Our library offers books, e-books and databases as well as reading and learning workstations, computers, a book scanner and a multifunctional device for printing and copying. The library offers regular training courses (e.g. on research, Citavi, etc.).
  • Microsoft Office 365: As a student of FHWien der WKW you automatically have an account and can use various online apps for your studies. Simply log in with your FHWien login data (the same as for FHWien|Online)!
  • Moodle: Moodle is the learning and communication platform of FHWien der WKW. Here you will find all the important information about your courses (e.g.: literature, exercises, etc.).
  • ÖH FHWien: The ÖH FHWien, freely elected, represents the interests of all students at FHWien der WKW, both internally and externally. Further information can be found on the website of the ÖH FHWien.
  • Printing: Our students can print, scan and copy using the multifunctional devices. There are several options e. g. in the IT room B106, in the library and in the break areas on the 2nd and 4th floors. Printing instructions can be found in the Moodle glossary.
  • Q&A: Answers to your questions can be found in the Moodle glossary. All kinds of important information for students are listed there from A-Z.
  • Radio Radieschen 91.3: Did you already tune in? Radio Radieschen is our in-house training radio station, where our Journalism & Media Management students learn how to produce radio content in theory and practice. Tune in on radio-radieschen.at, Soundcloud and Spotify.
  • Scholarships & grants: All information on scholarships and grants (e.g.: study grant, travel allowance, insurance contribution, merit scholarship, etc.) can be found in our Moodle glossary.
  • Service Point: Your first contact point for all kinds of questions. Our Service Point team is happy to help with issuing and renewing the Campus Card, issuing confirmations, correspondence of messages, lost & found, classroom management, issuing locker room keys and discount cards for the underground parking garages, etc.
  • Studo app: FHWien der WKW provides the PRO version of the Studo app to all students for free. The app lets you access all of our services conveniently and easily on your mobile device. For example: the course overview of your courses, your calendar with courses and exams, newsfeed with important FHWien der WKW news, your e-mails and a chat for connecting with your fellow students. Download the Studo app now for Android or iOS.
  • Study and examination regulations: The current study and examination regulations can be found on our website.
  • Tuition fees: Don’t forget to pay your tuition fees on time before the start of each semester! According to your contract, you must always pay the tuition fees per semester in advance (for the winter semester by August, 31 at the latest and for the summer semester by January, 31 at the latest). Payments after the deadline will result in the cancellation of your education contract.
  • Underground parking: We have two garages at the WKO Campus. Short-term parkers can use the garage B (entrance Gürtel) and C (entrance Semperstraße). Garage C is reserved for long-term parking. The current parking rates can be found on the APCOA Parking website. Discount cards are available for students at the Service Point. It is also possible to rent a discounted long-term parking space at APCOA Parking.
  • Vacation: Vacation is important to recover from the intense lecture and exam time. The exact dates for Christmas, semester break, Easter and summer vacations can be found on Moodle.
  • Wardrobe lockers: For a deposit of € 20,- you can rent a locker at the Service Point. You must return the key at the end of your studies the latest .
  • WIFI: FHWien der WKW is equipped with wifi. How to log in: Username: firstname.lastname@edu.fh-wien.ac.at; Password: same as in FHWien|Online.
  • Writing Center: Do you need help with academic writing? Our Writing Center regularly offers interesting workshops and writing consultations for our students.
  • YouTube & Co.: We are using many social media platforms to share exclusive insights into student and campus life, important news, information about events, and much more with our followers. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Xing, Twitter and YouTube. We also have our very own video platform: On FHWien 360 you can find exciting videos of our study areas, students and alumni.
