Seestadt Aspern is a new district on the outskirts of Vienna – by 2030, over 25,000 people will live and over 20,000 will work here. Construction has been underway since 2010 and currently over 11,000 people live in Seestadt and more than 5,000 work in the area.

Cornelia Dlabaja has ethnographically analyzed the lakeside town of Aspern over several years. In her book Die Seestadt Aspern – Ein Stadtteil im Werden (The Urban Lakeside Aspern – A District in the Making), she sheds light on previously unexamined upheavals and changes, such as the transformation of the surrounding area and the loss of agricultural businesses. The author traces decision-making processes and examines various urban concepts such as the just city, the smart city, the sustainable city and the entrepreneurial city. Conflicts over the imagined future, rising heat in the city and the urban public sphere are also described.

Her research work in this book is an important component of the Visitor Economy Strategy, which she will scientifically support together with the Vienna Tourist Board as part of her endowed professorship. Important findings and results of this research will also be incorporated into her lectures for the Master’s program in Urban Tourism & Visitor Economy Management.
