On July 10, first-semester students in the Real Estate Management study programs gathered for a group field trip through downtown Vienna. In addition to the new bachelor’s and master’s students, the heads of the programs and cohort representatives from higher-year classes also participated. The goal was to combine the start of the academic year with an opportunity to get to know one another and gain a professional insight into Vienna’s architecture and urban development.
Architectural Tour of Vienna
The approximately one-and-a-half-hour walking tour was led by guest lecturer Sophie Hofmann-Warnke and architect Christoph Warnke. The tour began at Schillerplatz, where the group learned more about the construction of the Ringstraße. The demolition of the city wall and the subsequent development of the Ringstraße were among the most significant urban development projects of their time and continue to shape Vienna’s cityscape to this day.
The tour then continued to Albertinaplatz and on through the Hofburg to Michaelerplatz. At various stops along the way, the instructors explained the most important eras in Vienna’s architectural history and demonstrated how different architectural styles are reflected in the cityscape. They also provided interesting insights into the revitalization of historic buildings.
The field trip offered students an initial glimpse into the close connection between architecture, urban development, and the real estate industry. At the same time, the relaxed atmosphere provided an opportunity for conversation and exchange among bachelor’s and master’s students, faculty members, and students in higher semesters.
Thus, even before the actual start of the semester, Vienna became the first classroom—and the joint tour served as a successful kickoff to their studies in Real Estate Management.
