“Falling apart at the seams”

March 20, 2024

Marian Adolf, Andreas Hess and Gisela Reiter from the Department of Communication at FHWien der WKW presented “Measures for the re-integration of an eroding communication culture” at the annual conference of the German Communication Association (DGPuK) in Erfurt.

Heated debates, agitated tempers and an abundance of misinformation: the public debate is in crisis mode. Yet, social understanding is the basis for social cohesion, successful democracy and the precondition for overcoming the immense challenges facing humanity today.

“Visions for a better society” was the topic of the recently concluded DGPuK Annual Conference 2024 at the University of Erfurt. Over the course of three days, media and communication researchers from Germany, Switzerland and Austria exchanged views on successful communication under the conditions of digitalization.

Representatives from the Department of Communication at FHWien der WKW were also present. Marian Adolf, Andreas Hess and Gisela Reiter examined strategies against the discourse crisis of the digital society in their paper entitled “Falling apart at the seams: measures for the re-integration of an eroding communication culture”. The results – as well as other findings of the conference – attest that a single measure is not enough to cope with the far-reaching consequences of digital transformation. Civil society, schools, politics, and media regulation must work together to work toward vision of a better life in communication and media.
