“Current Issues of Management“: Leadership in the context of the international business magazine “Forbes”

April 17, 2018

At the second lecture of the lecture series “Current Issues of Management” Wolfgang Scheikl (Forbes Austria) and his team members Pia-Maria Hauschild (digital strategies) as well as Niklas Hintermayer (editor) visited our students. In their keynote speech, they spoke about the relevance of independent news for the leaders of tomorrow, the challenges of good leadership and gave the students advice for becoming successful leaders.

In the lecture series “Current Issues of Management”, which takes place in the 6th semester of the Bachelor’s program “Unternehmensführung – Entrepreneurship”, economic topics are expanded upon and looked at from a practical perspective. Therefore, different representatives from well-known companies are invited to each session to speak on a topic.

Forbes stands for real independent business journalism with closeness to the business world. Despite the challenges of the media industry due to low margins, Forbes strives to produce news which is based on solid research and which can be substantiated. Forbes aims to display realities, which is also reflected by the magazine covers only showing faces, as it is real people who are behind successful companies.

To become good leaders, Mr. Scheikl gave the students the following advice:

  • Travel a lot, as it enriches life
  • Deal with mediums that depict the reality
  • Deal with yourself, know what you want and communicate it
  • Don’t chose the easy way but learn to discuss passionately and state your own opinions. As only when leaders communicate what they want, are other people able to negotiate with you on equal terms

In the lecture, the students were also right away invited to openly discuss their opinion on critical questions, such as “Would you have elected Trump?”, “What do you think about compulsory memberships” and “What does neoliberalism mean for you?”.

The second part of the lecture was designed in a special format: four students were asked to take part in a discussion moderated by Niklas Hintermayer, answering  questions such as “What does leadership mean to you?”, “Which characteristics does a good leader have?” and “To what extent does organization size have an impact on the leadership style?”

As usual, the students made the most of the  networking possibilities with the visitors from Forbes.

As a special present – and for that we wish to extend a heart-felt thank you – all the visitors of the lectures got a free annual subscription of the Forbes magazine.
