Many scientists agree that climate change, together with biodiversity loss, is the greatest and most urgent crisis of this century. But does media coverage adequately reflect its scale and urgency? How can journalists report on the climate crisis without triggering fatalism or resignation? And how can the topic be approached from different perspectives and beyond traditional editorial beats?
The workshop is part of the Future Impact Days at FHWien der WKW and is open to anyone interested.
This workshop provides an opportunity to refresh participants’ understanding of the scientific foundations of the climate crisis and introduces perspectives from psychology and communication studies that help explain why the scale and complexity of the issue often conflict with the way the media operate. Using examples of (constructive) reporting, participants will then analyze how they can sharpen their own journalistic work in this regard.
The workshop is led by Katharina Kropshofer, climate journalist and Head of the Nature Desk at the Austrian weekly newspaper Falter. She studied biology, cultural and social anthropology, and science journalism in Vienna and London. Her work focuses on the scientific system, ecology, and the intersection of nature and culture. She is also involved in Netzwerk Klimajournalismus, where she advocates for clear, appropriate, and constructive climate reporting.
