How does data translate into informed decisions? Students in the fifth semester of the Bachelor’s program in Finance, Accounting & Taxation explore this question in the course “Controlling and Business Analytics I,” working extensively with the Power BI analytics tool.
After an introduction to the basics, they create their first reports and learn how to effectively prepare data for use in controlling. They quickly move beyond this: Students develop their own reports, analyze cost and variance trends, and visualize process and quality data.
Data Science with Power BI
A particular focus is placed on looking beyond the numbers. Using visual analytics and data storytelling, connections are made clear and anomalies are identified—for example, in transactions, cash flows, or operational processes.
An essential component is independent work: Students formulate their own business-related questions, explore datasets, and develop appropriate visualizations. This leads, step by step, to meaningful analyses.
The course concludes with a report project developed by the students themselves through group work. The goal is not only to present data, but to analyze and interpret it in a way that provides a clear foundation for business decisions.
The course thus combines business management expertise with data science and specifically prepares students for the demands of data-driven business practices.
