AI Certificate: Skills You Can Put to Use Right Away

Categories: Uncategorized

Since the 2025–2026 winter semester, FHWien der WKW has been sending a clear signal about the future: Students can earn an AI certificate that specifically prepares them for the professional use of artificial intelligence. In doing so, the university is responding not only to the growing importance of AI in the workplace but also to specific regulatory requirements such as the European Union’s AI Act.

What makes this program unique is that the certificate is awarded during the course of study—not just upon graduation. Students can thus apply the knowledge they’ve gained directly to their professional practice and present the certificate to employers.

AI Skills Integrated into the Curriculum

The AI certificate is integrated into selected courses in some degree programs; in the Tourism & Hospitality Management program, for example, it is part of the course “Digital Transformation in Tourism.” If there are no suitable courses in the curriculum, an optional course is offered. Starting in the winter semester of 2027–2028, the acquisition of AI competencies will be permanently integrated into the curriculum of all bachelor’s degree programs. This offers a clear advantage, particularly for part-time students: they can apply the content directly in their jobs, giving them a competitive edge over their peers.

Content with Relevance and Critical Reflection

The training covers key topics that address both technical understanding and social responsibility. An overview of the certificate’s content:

  • Definition of AI:
Basic introduction to the concept of artificial intelligence and how it differs from other technologies
  • Terminology: AI, AGI (HLMI), GAI, RAG, etc.
Explanation of key technical terms and differentiation between various AI approaches and stages of development
  • Legal: GDPR and AI Act
Explanation of the most important legal frameworks, with a focus on data protection and regulatory requirements
  • Technical: How LLMs Work
    How Large Language Models function
  • Ethics: Impact of AI Systems on Society and the Workforce
Critical reflection on the societal and workplace consequences of AI applications
  • AI Applications: Creating Your Own Chatbots
    Hands-on exercises

This combination of theory, practice, and reflection ensures that graduates of FHWien der WKW not only understand how AI works but are also able to use it responsibly.

The FHWien der WKW AI Certificate combines technical expertise, legal foundations, and critical thinking in a compact format. It provides clear added value for students and companies alike.
