FHWien der WKW and AG Globale Verantwortung cordially invite you to the event “Democracy Needs Headwinds: Why Free Media and Civil Society Are Indispensable.”
Democratic freedoms are coming under increasing pressure worldwide. Journalists, human rights organisations and civil society organisations are increasingly facing intimidation, funding cuts and political marginalisation. At the same time, conditions for independent journalism and press freedom are deteriorating. These developments are no longer confined to authoritarian states but are also affecting European democracies.
The event will address the following questions:
- How does political and economic influence affect the work of media organisations and NGOs?
- What are the consequences of attacks on press freedom and civil society for democratic societies?
- How can independent journalism and civil society engagement be strengthened sustainably?
