Reputation & Relevance

Novel specialization of Sustainability and International Communication

FHWien der WKW is the first university of applied sciences in Austria to offer the combination of international communication and sustainability. This program is unique in that it equips students with a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of how communication shapes processes to achieve environmental, social and economic sustainability.

Graduates in communication sciences or business administration, as well as professionals from communication and business will find the curriculum professionally beneficial.  However, this program is also suitable for sustainability specialists who want to develop their communication skills and learn how to change the domineering rhetoric.

FHWien der WKW is based in Vienna; the hub in central Europe and meeting point of non-profit and international organizations. We also have excellent relationships with a variety of organizations, providing access to potential employers and opportunities to collaborate on projects that provide valuable real-world experience. We have a host of guest speakers throughout the program who often have ideas for the Master´s thesis and this may lead to employment opportunities.

Study alongside your career

Designed for busy professionals

The MA (CE) International Sustainability Communication at FHWien der WKW is easy to combine with a career. The high proportion of distance learning offers the possibility of flexible study. In addition to guided self-study, the program also offers highly structured virtual learning phases that support students alongside their jobs.

How you'll learn

Teaching and learning

The learning concept of the MA (CE) International Sustainability Communication is distinguished because of its high level of practically relevant content, its innovative teaching and learning methods and its compatibility with the needs of working students. Teaching takes place through lectures, seminars, workshops and field trips, which provide in-depth exploration of key issues.  Lectures and workshops will be blocked on Fridays and Saturdays and 50 % will be offered via Distance Learning, this can be synchronous or asynchronous lectures, working on projects, tackling assignments independently or in groups.

Curriculum

The content and the order of the classes and modules for the MA (CE) International Sustainability Communication have been chosen so that an integrative overall understanding of sustainability communication is ensured. Students are prepared for their professional careers as sustainability communicators in the digital globalized world by acquiring technical, methodic, scientific and implementation-oriented qualifications and skills.

Curricula are improved on an ongoing basis so as to fit in with latest developments in the working world and new international trends. Our motto spans from “know more” to “do more” – meaning that we focus on practical usefulness of what is learned.

The program is taught entirely in English.

The program combines four different strands all connected to the central theme of sustainability communication.  Students are immersed in Master level communication topics which go beyond CSR and review communication theories from a global perspective. Internal, crisis and digital communication are fine-tuned all with a sustainability lens.

The second strand focuses on understanding the multi-disciplinary phenomenon of sustainability, reviewed from a psychological and sociological perspective.  Students will also gain a deep understanding of diverse stakeholders, learn about behavioural drivers and review strategies of how to influence and nudge them. Sustainability Reporting is a key skill and is addressed from the national, international and corporate level.

A third strand offers students an in-depth understanding of the economics of sustainability, sustainability strategy and not to mention the global leadership skills graduates in these disciplines will require to be able to drive transformation. Finally, connecting these strands are the modules focused on multi-disciplinary skills and practical projects, trend workshops and a summer excursion to reflect on sustainability at the European level.

Students can opt for either a full Master degree by completing all four semesters or for those who would rather focus on the content from the first two semesters,  they will be awarded the Academic Expert certificate.

This academic continuing education program is carried out in accordance with §9 FHG (Federal Act on University of Applied Sciences Studies Act).

The MA (CE) International Sustainability Communication  is approved and accredited by the Academic Board of FHWien der WKW, University of Applied Science for Management and Communication.
