Focus & Qualifications
The contents of the degree program focuses on the following areas:
- Entrepreneurship: development of products and offers for tourists, innovation in tourism, start-up companies and company take-over
- Management: business management, tourism finance, strategic HR management, change management, quality management, leadership & teamwork skills
- Design thinking: service design, production and architecture in tourism
- Tourist networks: internal marketing, strategy development, collaboration in tourism
- International tourism management: contracts with international experts, (self-organized) excursions
In the module “International tourism management” important insights into national and international tourism management are given through lectures given by international experts. In 2014 the Master’s students decided to travel to Albania and Montenegro, in 2015 they travelled to Portugal. The level of organization required for the excursion was worth it however because students learnt so much.
The Master’s program in Leadership in Tourism & Hospitality is geared towards graduates who already have a basic knowledge of business administration, who expect a degree program with a balance between theory and practice and who want to network with other people from the tourism industry.
A strong international orientation is an essential element of the Master’s program in Leadership in Tourism & Hospitality. Numerous modules such as The Tourism System, International Tourism Management, Leadership Advanced or Strategic Management and Microeconomics of Competitiveness are offered in English.
In the 3rd semester you also have the opportunity to spend an exchange semester at one of our numerous partner universities worldwide.
Closely connected to the tourism industry
This degree program was developed together with the tourist industry and meets its needs. “Close cooperation with partner companies, as well as top lecturers from the tourist industry guarantee a practically relevant degree program”, says the former Head of the degree program FH-Prof. Mag. Michael Mair.
The increasing level of professionalization and internationalization requires more leadership in tourism. This is also communicated to us in these statements from our partners in the tourism industry: “Leadership positions in the international hotel industry are increasingly being filled with Master’s graduates.” (Susanne Kraus-Winkler, entrepreneur and vice-president of the EU umbrella association HOTREC) “As it becomes more professionalized and internationalized, tourism needs leadership.” (Paul Blagusz, entrepreneur) “Tourism needs leadership because it is part of global competition.” (Michaela Reitterer, president of the Austrian Hotel Industry Union, and owner and CEO of the boutique hotel Stadthalle in Vienna)
We support students in building up a professional network with notable personalities in the tourism industry, for example by giving them access to our exclusive “Executive club”. The connections made in this club are a great basis for a successful career path.
Practical projects, international excursions, expert discussions and company visits – the Master’s program in Leadership in Tourism & Hospitality focuses on practical training.
Business Field Projects
Students work on business field projects related to the tourism industry, which helps them improve their problem-solving skills, teamwork skills and methodic skills. Examples for business field projects from the past can be found here.
The degree program includes many field trips. Students start off the program with a field trip where they get to know each other and receive the first insights into the industry. As part of the degree program there are many more field trips; this is one of the ways in which our degree program combines theory and practice. Students show their independence and practical skills during field trips, as they are responsible for organizing the destinations and trips themselves.
TM on tour
TM on Tour is where we make visits to different sectors of the tourism industry. This allows our students to gain important insights into the tourism industry and helps them to make their own picture of best practice examples.
